Portrait of Former Professors in Special Collections Reading Room

On October 29th, a painting by local artist Elaine Wheeler Chambers was unveiled in the reading room of Special Collections, where it now hangs on the 4th floor of the Zach S. Henderson Library.  Later, on November 11th,  it was exhibited at the Veterans Day celebration at the Emma Kelly Theater. This painting shows three veterans of World War II who became professors here at Georgia Southern, done from photos of the three during the War.  These are Dr. Kemp Mabry (1925-2007), Professor of Education; Roxie Remley, Professor of Art; and Dr. Georgia Watson (1912-1993), Professor of Psychology.  Ms. Remley was present and spoke of her experiences as a member, like Dr. Watson, of the Women’s Army Corps in England.

Libraries and the Economic Crisis

Higher education in the United States is struggling financially.  Library budgets are being squeezed, forcing cancellations of databases, journal subscriptions, book purchases, etc.  GIL Express, the University System of Georgia’s expedited delivery of books among USG Libraries, is operating under emergency funds through the end of the fall semester, and there are no promises after that.  As Bloomberg reports, The University of Georgia Libraries are “canceling at least 660 journals to save $1.66 million annually.”
The Zach S. Henderson Library at Georgia Southern University is also having to make deep cuts in our information supply.  You’ll be hearing from us soon about a full subscription review.  All of our ongoing subscriptions to databases, journals, and other continuing resources will have to be critically considered, and we will rely upon our faculty experts across campus to make recommendations for canceling the least essential resources.  We strive to deliver the necessary information and services, even in the current economic crisis; in this way we hope to continue to achieve our mission.  Thank you for your understanding and your support.  Please see below for one way you can help.

“The Happy Endings Craft Group from Henderson Library is sponsoring a “Knit Your Bit” event on Tuesday. November 11th at 12:00 noon for one hour in Zach’s Brews to honor and/or commemorate our U.S. Veterans (all wars).

There will be someone to instruct you and yarn and needles available to practice while you are there.
A few items will be available for purchase, if you would like to continue at home.

We have some historical information about “Knit Your Bit” available, in case you are interested.

We will teach crochet or knit to anyone interested–students (men and women), staff, faculty, spouses, and visitors, too.  Yes, I said “men,” since they are probably the first knitters according to history.

We have some patterns from the World War II era, too!  Hopefully, participants will continue and crochet or knit a scarf for a veteran or soldier, in the long term.  You could give the scarf to your favorite veteran or we can get a name for you or, a third option, send the item to a group who distributes them.

Please, join us in “KNIT YOUR BIT !”  Honor a veteran and learn a new skill/hobby at the same time!

The Happy Endings Craft Group is open to everyone every week.  Just speak with a member about joining.  No cost involved whatsoever.

Spread the word, too, please!”
