Ribbon cutting culminates $22 million renovation and expansion of Zach S. Henderson Library

“Georgia Southern University celebrated the expansion and renovation of the Zach S. Henderson Library with a ribbon cutting Jan. 21 in the library atrium. The ribbon cutting hosted by President Bruce Grube culminated a major capital project that began in the summer of 2004. The $22.75 million expansion/renovation added 101,000 square feet to the library’s original 132,000.”  Please see the full story here!

Hot Doc: Pandemic Flu Update

The House Homeland Security Committee released a majority staff report
today indicating the country is not ready for Pandemic Flu.  The report
is entitled “Getting Beyond Getting Ready for Pandemic Influenza” and is
available at:

http://homeland.house.gov/SiteDocuments/20090114124322-85263.pdf

According to the press release, the report “examines the Nation’s state
of preparedness and response capabilities in the event of a pandemic
influenza outbreak. It identifies sixteen weaknesses in the outgoing
Bush Administration’s approach to get prepared for pandemic influenza.
In addition, the report provides fifteen critical recommendations for
what Congress, the incoming Administration, and the public and private
sectors can do to achieve National readiness to combat this threat.”

New GALILEO password

Just a reminder:  The GALILEO password changes each term, on a statewide calendar.  Anytime you’d like to verify the current password, here’s how.  This password is only to be used my members of the Georgia Southern University community.

New Interface for Electronic Journals

Dear Patrons,
Last year, GALILEO implemented SFX software to provide the e-journal A-Z list and links for GALILEO databases.  Many of you are already familiar with the SFX interface from GALILEO’s usage of it; a brief overview is available at http://www.exlibrisgroup.com/category/UsingSFX.
As of January 1, 2009, Henderson Library has made the switch from EBSCO A-Z software for providing links to electronic journals to the SFX A-Z software.  (No worries, we still have the EBSCO databases!)  The “Electronic Journals A-Z” link from the Library’s home page has been changed to link to the SFX A-Z list.   Although the look of the new list is very different from the previous one, it contains the same type of information.   More changes are coming to make the list more user-friendly.
You will also see a new look for information for individual titles in the library catalog.   There will no longer be a “click here” message in the records to link to full text.  That message has been replaced by the following:
“Click FIND IT button above.”
The “find it” button is at the top of the record to the left of the “brief display” button, and only appears if there are electronic holdings.
Activating access to titles through SFX and changing the library catalog notes/links to SFX are manual tasks.  We have activated most of the titles and periodical packages and converted many of the notes/links, but you will continue to see the old “click here” notes until we complete the systematic review each title.
If you encounter a link that does not work correctly, please contact Debra Skinner, Catalog Librarian, at dskinner@georgiasouthern.edu, and we will correct the problem as quickly as possible.  In your message,  please include the journal title and a brief description of the problem.
Since we are still in the process of activating some titles, we recommend checking both the Henderson Library and the GALILEO electronic journal A-Z lists, since a title might be in one place and not the other at this point.  (The GALILEO list is at the yellow tab marked “Journals A-Z.”)
Please ask us about any link that does not work the way that you think it should.  In other words, if in doubt, please report it!
If you need additional information about this change, please contact the Henderson Library Learning Commons Desk (478-5645) or submit your request via Ask a Librarian (http://library.georgiasouthern.edu/forms/askzach.html)
Thank you, from your friends at the Zach S. Henderson Library!

All Things New…

As we begin a New Year, we’re also starting a new semester. That means new classes, new professors, new assignments, and new projects. It’s all new! We’re also preparing for the rededication/ribbon cutting of our new library on January 21 @ 2pm. Inside the new library we have new furniture, new equipment, and new services.
First, we have equipment available to the student body for checkout. There are 18 laptops and 2 projectors for in-house library use. Available for 24-hour checkout is a digital camera and video camcorder. The projectors may be used in the Learning Commons on the white screens connected to the sofas with the floral print. If the sofas are in use, the projectors may be used in a group study room. Any of the equipment is available for collaborative group study within the library.
The next new service/resource available to students is the availability of the Presentation Practice Room on the first floor (Room 1212A). Students are able to reserve this room online and use it for practicing any kind of presentation or speech. The room is setup like a standard smart classroom found anywhere on campus. Software include the MS Office Suite, Internet access, and recording software. You are able to write on the Sympodium screen like a whiteboard and save any notes from the screen to any storage device. There is also an Elmo overhead projector stored on the side of the teacher station for demonstrating overheads, books, pictures, or similar kinds of media. Upon making your reservation, the key and laser pointer/clicker can be checked out from the Circulation Desk on the 2nd floor.
Last but not least of all things new, are the group study rooms. Students can study individually throughout the library or use one of 29 group study rooms. Three of the 29 group study rooms are designated for graduate students only. There is a computer in most of the study rooms. The Graduate Study Rooms are also available upon reservation. The key can be checked out from the Circulation Desk while the study rooms are available on a first come first serve basis.
For more information on the available equipment, Presentation Practice Room, group study rooms, or other library services and resources go to the library’s website or the Learning Commons wiki. If you have any questions please email us at learningcommons@georgiasouthern.edu.
