Excitement builds

Soon both sections of the library will be open to the public again at long last!  Take a look at the live webcams, where books are being shelved as we speak.  Keep an eye on Zach’s News for the opening announcement!

(P.S.:  Take a look at some of the new furniture, which arrived yesterday.  You can view it through the windows on the 2nd floor near the Circulation Desk.)

We’d love to hear your comments!

Library entrance from parking lot re-opened!

Work continues on grading and paving outside the north entrance, from the parking lot behind the library.  For your safety, these doors were locked during the most recent phase of the project, and the lakeside entrance on the south side was the only entrance.  We are pleased to announce that both entrances are now open again.  There is a new vehicle gate (for construction vehicles only) near the parking lot, with a small entry for pedestrians when the gate is closed.  We appreciate your patience in these final stages of our expansion and renovation!

Library entrance from parking lot temporarily closed

Work has begun on grading and paving outside the north entrance, from the parking lot behind the library.  For your safety, these doors have been locked during this phase of the project.  The south entrance on the lakeside will be the only entrance.  We appreciate your patience in these final stages of our expansion and renovation!

Expansion & Renovation Update

Never let it be said that we don’t respond to your concerns! :) We came across the following quote in the May 29 Connect Statesboro. As you might have noticed, they publish a column of anonymous call-in complaints, “That Blows.”
“It blows that GSU has been doing construction on the library since dirt was invented. Every time I try to check out books they have to order ‘em from the warehouse. What warehouse? Where’s it at, just let me go there.”
It has indeed been a long construction process, and we’re excited about the upcoming completion. During the construction, we have used off-campus storage for some of our lesser-used items. When you request an item from the Warehouse, we gladly have it delivered here for you. These items, after being checked back in, are then kept in the Library. We appreciate your patience during this time! (By the way, the Warehouse isn’t open to visitors because it’s dimly lit, not staffed, and not conducive to public access. Sorry!)
You’ve probably noticed the already-painted section of the building through the windows. Yes, this does mean we’re closer to completion! In fact, this month they will remove the temporary wall separating the two sections. Since that area will remain under construction, we have already begun placing temporary barriers (upturned furniture, etc.) to prevent people from wandering into a danger zone.
Our live webcams are still in action, and more details on the project are here.

Expansion and Renovation Update

There is a good possibility the renovation of the Zach S. Henderson
Library will be completed in time that the full building, housing all
our collections, furnishings, and personnel, will be available to the
public by the beginning of fall classes in August of 2008. Meanwhile,
in February of 2008 Georgia Southern University must raze the building
in which the Federal and Georgia documents collection is now temporarily housed. Therefore the documents collection will have to be temporarily housed in other quarters between February and August of 2008.

We have begun moving the most recently published, most often-used, and
reference government documents materials to the publicly accessible
portion of Henderson Library’s third floor. Government documents on
microform will be placed in a storage area on the Library’s bottom
floor and items will be paged for patrons upon demand. In addition, the law collection (which had been housed in the temporary government documents building) will be located on the third floor of the Library. Service for these collections will be offered from the Information Services Desk on the third floor. More information on the relocation is at http://library.georgiasouthern.edu/documents/govdocsmove.html, and more information on the government document collection and services is available at http://library.georgiasouthern.edu/documents/

In order to make room for the government documents and the law collection, the Bound Periodicals published earlier than 2000 have been relocated to the ARC (Automated Retrieval Collection) for the time being. We look forward to having more space on open shelves following the expansion. Thank you for your patience during the final exciting months of the expansion and renovation! As always, our many e-journals are available in our Electronic Journals A-Z list, as well as in the library catalog.
