The Middle Georgia Archives and Digital Library of Georgia are pleased to announce the availability of a new online resource: The Georgia State Fair, Macon, 1886-1960.

The Georgia State Fair, Macon, 1886-1960 online collection consists of 151 black-and-white photographs, and four advertising fliers, from the
Georgia State Fair records held by the Middle Georgia Archives at the Macon-Bibb County Public Libraries. These photographs document the
evolution of the state fair in Macon from 1886 until 1960. A group portrait of the executive committee of the Georgia State Agricultural
Society is the earliest piece in the collection. The majority of the photographs depict county agricultural exhibits whose function was to
promote a variety of farm produce and homemade items. These displays include cotton, seeds, vegetables, preserved food, clothes, quilts,
furniture, and more. Exhibits from the early 1940s are of interest due to the appearance of slogans supporting the World War II home front
effort. One notable picture during this era shows a demonstration of a community canning project. Displays for agricultural associations and
state government agencies, such as the Highway Department and the Fish and Game Commission, can also be seen in this collection. Other
photographs capture fair culture beyond the exhibitions: 4-H clubs, farm machinery, livestock judging, amusement rides, the midway, side shows,
food booths, and parades. Macon mayor B. F. Merritt appears in several photographs along with other notable Macon citizens. Former Georgia
governor Marvin Griffin is also pictured.

The Georgia State Fair, Macon, 1886-1960 is a project of the Digital Library of Georgia in association with the Middle Georgia Archives as
part of Georgia HomePLACE. The project is supported with federal LSTA funds administered by the Institute of Museum and Library Services
through the Georgia Public Library Service, a unit of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia.

Children’s Core Collection provides information about fiction & nonfiction works, story collections, picture books & magazines recommended for readers from preschool through sixth grade.  Our trial access is through May 31.

Cinema Image Gallery includes still images, links to film reviews & other articles about titles, links to biographies of the stars of film & TV, portrait photography, & more.  Our trial access is through May 31.

OmniFile Full Text Mega provides the full text of articles from over 1,750 publications, and article abstracts & indexing from over 3,500 publications, in a variety of subject areas.  Our trial access is through May 31.

R2 Library is a collection of electronic books available for individual purchase, in the areas of allied health, medicine, and nursing.  Our trial access is through May 21.

Recent Changes to GALILEO

In the year since the GALILEO community interfaces were first introduced on March 17, 2008, suggestions received from users and library staffs have been addressed through the GALILEO Change Review Process. Recent changes that are now available include the following:

“Articles & Databases” is now the top tab within the subject areas, and modifications to the GALILEO “Journals A-Z” search feature have been made to better include resources that each library subscribes to with our own funds.

Where possible, “Return to GALILEO” links have been enabled within databases.

Available only on campus, ArchiveGrid provides Online access to nearly a million
descriptions of archival collections owned by thousands of
libraries, museums, historical societies and archives worldwide.
ArchiveGrid is an important destination for searching for historical
documents, personal papers and family histories held in archives.

CAMIO (Catalog of Art Museum Images Online)

Available only on campus, CAMIO (Catalog of Art Museum Images Online) provides access to
high-quality art images from around the world contributed and described
by leading museums, all rights-cleared for educational use. Every work
in CAMIO is represented by at least one high-resolution image and a
description. Many have additional views of the work, sound, video and
curatorial notes. CAMIO art images span the following categories:

• Photographs
• Prints
• Sculptures
• Paintings
• Decorative arts
• Posters
• Costumes
• Utilitarian objects
• Jewelry

COS Funding Opportunities

An open-access (free) database, OAIster is a catalog of more than 19 million open-access digital resources
from over 1,000 organizations developed by the University of Michigan
and harvested using OAI-PMH (the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for
Metadata Harvesting). Digital resources in OAIster include items such as:

• Digitized (i.e., scanned) books and articles
• Born-digital texts
• Audio files (e.g., wav, mp3)
• Images (e.g., tiff, gif)
• Movies (e.g., mp4, quicktime)
• Datasets (e.g., downloadable statistics files)

PrimateLit

An open-access (free) database, the PrimateLit database provides bibliographic access to the scientific literature on nonhuman primates for the research and educational communities. Coverage of the database spans 1940 to present and includes all publication categories (articles, books, abstracts, technical reports, dissertations, book chapters, etc.) and many subject areas (behavior, colony management, ecology, reproduction, field studies, disease models, veterinary science, psychology, physiology, pharmacology, evolution, taxonomy, developmental and molecular biology, genetics and zoogeography).
