The Mid-Session Review, Budget of the United States Government, Fiscal
Year 2009, is now available from GPO at:
http://www.gpoaccess.gov/usbudget/fy09/pdf/09msr.pdf.

For the first time, the electronic version of the Mid-Session Review for
FY 2009 on GPO Access is digitally signed and certified. The signature
not only establishes GPO as the trusted information disseminator, but
also provides users the assurance that the electronic PDF document has
not been altered since it was disseminated by GPO. For more information
on GPO’s authentication initiatives, visit
http://www.gpoaccess.gov/authentication.

The Mid-Session Review is an annual update of estimates for Federal
receipts and outlays that reflects economic, legislative, and other
changes that have occurred since the President’s Budget was released in
February.

“substitute a new statute that would provide for more meaningful
consultation between the President and Congress. In its final report,
the Commission has recommended that Congress pass a new statute, the War
Powers Consultation Act of 2009, establishing a clear process on
decisions to go to war.”

Hot Docs: Census Atlas of the United States: Census 2000 Special Reports

Take a look at this wonderful atlas produced by the Census Bureau! When is the last time you saw one of these? The Census Bureau last produced a complete population and housing atlas like this in the 1920’s. This oversized hardbound atlas is filled with colorful depictions of detailed current and historical demographics for the United States, and will be helpful to a wide range of researchers. It is also delightful to browse. This government document is shelved in our Documents Reference collection on the 3rd floor of Henderson Library, at GOV DOCS REF C 3.205/8-3:29. If you prefer, there is also a PDF here. Read the news release here.

“Protecting the Constitutional Right to Vote for All Americans”: Jonah H Goldman testifies before Senate Committee on the Judiciary

Jonah H Goldman, Director of the National Campaign for Fair Elections and Legal Leader of the Election Protection Coalition, testified before the Senate Committee on the Judiciary on Tuesday May 20, 2008. At issue is disfranchisement due to voter ID requirements, military voting problems, technological malfunctions, inaccurate registration lists and poorly trained or poorly provisioned poll workers.

Expansion and Renovation Update

There is a good possibility the renovation of the Zach S. Henderson
Library will be completed in time that the full building, housing all
our collections, furnishings, and personnel, will be available to the
public by the beginning of fall classes in August of 2008. Meanwhile,
in February of 2008 Georgia Southern University must raze the building
in which the Federal and Georgia documents collection is now temporarily housed. Therefore the documents collection will have to be temporarily housed in other quarters between February and August of 2008.

We have begun moving the most recently published, most often-used, and
reference government documents materials to the publicly accessible
portion of Henderson Library’s third floor. Government documents on
microform will be placed in a storage area on the Library’s bottom
floor and items will be paged for patrons upon demand. In addition, the law collection (which had been housed in the temporary government documents building) will be located on the third floor of the Library. Service for these collections will be offered from the Information Services Desk on the third floor. More information on the relocation is at http://library.georgiasouthern.edu/documents/govdocsmove.html, and more information on the government document collection and services is available at http://library.georgiasouthern.edu/documents/

In order to make room for the government documents and the law collection, the Bound Periodicals published earlier than 2000 have been relocated to the ARC (Automated Retrieval Collection) for the time being. We look forward to having more space on open shelves following the expansion. Thank you for your patience during the final exciting months of the expansion and renovation! As always, our many e-journals are available in our Electronic Journals A-Z list, as well as in the library catalog.

Georgia Official and Statistical Register

As of 18 January 2008, the Georgia Official and Statistical Register was added as a new, public resource from the Digital Library of Georgia into the GALILEO demo system.  It is available for your preview at http://dlg.galileo.usg.edu/statregister/

The Georgia Official and Statistical Register, published from 1923-1990 by the Georgia Department of Archives and History, is commonly known as the Georgia Blue Book. Considered an important reference work for historical research, the Register covers Georgia’s executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government, providing biographical sketches of elected and other state officials. Georgia members of U.S. Congress and federal judges are included, as are county officials and regents of the university system. The Blue Books contain election returns, provide basic reference data on Georgia counties, and cover Georgia miscellany, such as the state flag, state flower, state song, rosters of Georgia governors, and legal holidays.

The Georgia Official and Statistical Register site is a project of the Digital Library of Georgia as a part of the Georgia Government Publications program.
